Canton approves special utilisation plan

With the approval of the special utilisation plan, the Wild Heerbrugg Areal can look forward to a promising future. An important milestone that continues the site's 100-year history and lays the foundation for innovative, sustainable development.

The planning process began back in 2014 and involved close collaboration between owners, companies and authorities. Numerous challenges were overcome during the process, including external influences such as the cancellation of the minimum euro exchange rate and the impact of the coronavirus pandemic, which put many companies under pressure. The aim was to create clear framework conditions to enable high-quality structural densification and attractive workplaces.

A central focus of the approved special use plan is the densification and creation of future prospects for the site, which has been characterised by car parks to date. Two striking building projects are planned: an anchor building up to 50 metres high in the west and a building up to 30 metres high in the east. The construction project makes better use of the existing space and creates attractive development opportunities for local companies. At the same time, it creates potential for new jobs. To enhance the area, communal open spaces are planned, which will improve both the quality of life and the functionality of the site.

Holistic approach for sustainable development

The site was planned in close coordination with local planning and the requirements of the municipality. Particular attention was paid to harmonising the planned buildings with the historically significant elements such as Villa Schmidheiny and the nearby vineyard. Expert reports ensured that listed buildings could be integrated into the development. Another focus was on improving transport links. All objections received were resolved during the planning process.

A project with a signalling effect

The special utilisation plan marks the start of a long-term development process that will be implemented step by step over generations. With the conditions now created, the Wild Heerbrugg Areal will remain an important location for production, research and development – a clear signal of the region’s innovative strength and future viability.
